আইসিএমপি
IP-এর error reporting আর diagnostic message-এর helper protocol; ping আর traceroute এর উপরই দাঁড়িয়ে।
IP নিজে error report করতে পারে না — সেই কাজ ICMP-র (IP protocol 1)। Port নেই, connection নেই; ছোট control message-ই সব।

Diagnostic trio — ping (reachability + RTT), traceroute (TTL manipulation করে path), mtr (দুটোর মাঝামাঝি, continuous)।
সাবধানে ব্লক করুন — PMTUD-র “Fragmentation Needed” (type 3, code 4) আটকালে বড় packet-এর transfer black-hole হয়। Rate- limit ঠিক রেখে diagnostic types খোলা রাখা বুদ্ধিমানের কাজ; উল্টোদিকে ICMP flood আর smurf attack-ও এই protocol-ই।
